Best Camera Settings For Family Photos

Wondering what the best camera settings for family photos are? Then you’re in the perfect place!

In this video, I walk you through which aperture, shutter speed and ISO settings will give you the best results in your family portraits, along with some bonus tips and tricks to help you take them to the next level.

As always, use these suggested settings as a starting point to get you going, and then tweak as need be!

Unfortunately, it’s just not possible to give you settings that you can just plug in and use, because how much light is available, how many people are in the frame, what lens and what camera you are using (and so on!) will all affect which settings you can use, but the video will give you a great starting point, and talks you through what and when you might need to change.

I do also have a freebie that you can download that will help you out with choosing your camera settings - our free camera settings cheat sheet!

This details the aperture, shutter speed and ISO settings for different situations, so be sure to grab a copy of that too (it’s free!) :)

There’s also links to further reading / watching below the video so be sure to check those out too.

Watch now and learn:

  • The aperture numbers I typically use when shooting families, and how that changes based on the number of people in the frame

  • The shutter speed recommended when the family is mainly adults, and how I change that if there are kids in the frame

  • The ISO numbers I typically find myself using in different situations.

  • White balance and focus settings (and where to focus for groups!)

  • Plus tips and tricks for choosing the best camera settings for family photos
