A macro workshop with a difference!

This isn't just any old macro workshop!

I've combined core video trainings with unique "macro missions" to give you everything you need to nail the nuances of macro, and create those WOW shots!

We’ll dive deep into the universal principles of macro, such as focus, depth of field and lighting, so you can learn to shoot any subject you imagine, from flowers to food.

Then you can get inspired with our macro missions: step by step guides that give you specific shooting techniques to try, so you've got plenty of ideas and inspiration to get out there and experiment with macro!

And as our goal is everyday macro, nothing needs specialised equipment (although ideally you'll have a macro lens or extension tubes) so you can start to photograph beautiful close up photos of the world around you TODAY.

"Everyday" macro is taking photos of what you have around you, at home or in your garden (maybe buying some cheap and cheerful everyday items, like coloured card or sparkling water to use in some of our macro missions!)

For subjects, that means things like fruit, candy, flowers, water droplets, oil or leaves - or pretty much anything else that takes your fancy!

And you won't need twin flash units, alien bees, focusing rails, umbrellas or any other type of specialised equipment to take them either - just your camera and macro lens / extension tubes (although you could even take the course without those!) are needed to take stunning macro shots.

Great question!

You'll get the best results from this workshop if you have either a dedicated macro lens, OR you use extension tubes / close up filter for your existing lens.

Not sure what these are? Extension tubes / macro filters are a cheap and cheerful way to dip your toe into the world of macro!

These work with your regular lens to turn it into a macro one, and there are options from $15 up to $75 (and we have details in the macro gear guide in the course!)

That said, many of the techniques we talk about can be applied using your normal lens, so you can take the course just with what you have!

Just bear in mind that you won't get quite the same results in some of the macro challenges, because you won't be able to get as close as you can with a macro lens or extension tube/close up filter (But it will still be incredibly beautiful!)

You've been shooting macro for a while, and want to learn more advanced techniques that require extra equipment (like focusing rails or alien bees)
You’re a new photographer, and aren’t sure about camera settings or how to shoot in manual mode - you’ll need at least a basic grounding in photography first (like you get with our Auto to Awesome course!)

Do I need a macro lens?

To get the most from this workshop, you'll benefit from having either a dedicated macro lens or extension tubes for your existing lens. We have details of macro lenses and more wallet friendly alternatives (from $15 to $70) in the course. That said, you can absolutely take this workshop with a regular lens! You won't get quite the same results as your lens won’t be able to focus as close as it needs to for true macro photography, but it can still be beautiful!

When does this start? When do I get access to everything?

It starts as soon as you join! This is a self paced, instant access workshop, so all you have to do is sign up and you’ll get access to all of the materials instantly.

Do I have to finish the workshop in a certain time?

You'll have lifetime access to all the course materials, so you can really can take your time and go through the course at your own pace!

How long will it take me to complete?

It all depends on you! The main core trainings total up to just over 90 minutes of training, but the macro missions were designed to be spread out and give you enough inspiration for weeks! My prediction: you'll watch all the main trainings over a couple of days and be inspired to get shooting soon after, averaging 2 missions a week, taking the overall workshop to around 4 - 6 weeks.

I really don't want to buy lots of equipment! Will I need anything else!

You will want a macro lens or extension tubes / close up filter to get the most out of this workshop but you won't need anything else!

Some of our macro missions will require you to use everyday items that you will likely already have, or minor, inexpensive additions (like sparkling water or coloured paper!)

The goal of Everyday Macro Magic is to see beauty in what's around you, and shoot it with what you have around you :-)

What are the Macro Missions?

The macro missions are challenges that focus on implementing a single type of macro photo, from flowers to abstract art with oil and water. Each guide gives you a list of what you'll need, step by step set up instructions, suggested camera settings, pull back images and example photos with camera settings where appropriate. There's no particular order to the missions and you can do whichever one you want first, or skip any that you don't like!

What software do you use in the editing videos?

I use Lightroom Classic and Photoshop in the editing videos, but my focus is not to teach you those programs, but instead, give you a behind the scenes look at how I edit my macro photos, and ideas for you to try! You can take the concepts and apply them to your own editing software. (Although if you DO use LR and PS, then you can just follow along!)

I have all your other courses - is this a repeat?

If you have all my other courses there will be some repeat information in the core trainings (since all photography genres use the same foundational skills!) but you'll learn how to apply these concepts to macro specifically, with extra info that just covers macro, plus the macro missions are completely new and unique!

Will this teach me camera settings and how to shoot in manual mode?

This workshop focuses on expanding your creative skills and how to take macro photos specifically, so it assumes a knowledge of the elements of exposure and (ideally) shooting in manual mode. So while we will cover camera settings and general photography techniques, it definitely won't give you the in-depth knowledge you need to learn photography (we have our Auto to Awesome program for that!)
