And although I love teaching the technical side of photography, Christmas is the perfect time to simply play!

To experiment with light, movement, focus and perspective.

To document the season.

And to create images simply because they’re fun to make!.

That’s exactly why I created Christmas Photo Magic.

What do I need to complete the recipes? Will I need extra equipment? Can I do this with my phone camera?!

Let’s clear up all the gear questions at once 😛

You’ll need a DSLR or mirrorless camera, a lens you’re comfortable using, Christmas lights and decorations, a little time to experiment - and that’s it!

You won’t need any extra professional equipment or specialist accessories - unless you want to use them. For example, we may suggest keeping your camera steady on a tripod, but you can balance it on a pile of books instead! We also give ideas for extras should you want to use them, but they are totally optional.

As for whether you can use your phone instead, please note that everything was designed with DSLR or mirrorless camera users in mind.

However, you will definitely be able to do some ideas with just your phone camera, and others you may be able to adapt if you are comfortable using your phone camera to take creative photos! (And hey, it might just inspire you to get your first camera too!)
